Waikiki Beach Maintenance

Healy Tibbitts Builders, Inc.’s Waikiki Beach Maintenance project successfully restored one of the most famous beaches in the world. Given that Waikiki is an “economic engine” for the State of Hawaii, generating nearly half of the tourism expenditures, maintaining the Waikiki Beach is of paramount importance to Hawaii. Unfortunately, this man-made beach is not stable or self-sustaining, and has been eroding and receding at an annual rate of 1.5 feet since 1985. At this rate of erosion the narrower portions of the beach could have completely disappeared in another 15 to 20 years. The Waikiki Beach Maintenance project provided critical beach nourishment to over 1,700 feet of shoreline. The project required over 26,000 cubic yards of sand to be recovered from offshore borrow sites, pumped to the shore, dewatered and then transported and placed along the existing shoreline. This provided a revitalized beach widened by almost 40 feet from the Kuhio Beach Basin to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

This project was awarded the GCA of Hawaii’s 2013 Build Hawaii Awards of Excellence.
